Add elegance and uniqueness to your home by creating arched doorways. This article outlines how to create them; never have boring, square doorways again.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Utility knife
  • Drill
  • Phillips driving bit
  • Drywall screws
  • Rotozip
  • Flexible corner bead

Introduction

Imagine yourself walking through a beautifully arched doorway in your home. An arch adds elegance and character to a room. Never again be stuck with rectangular door archways that only add limited character to your home. This project requires no special tools, materials, or experience and the steps to install drywall on an arched doorway are not much different than the steps for a regular doorway. However, it does require a steady hand and some patience.

Step 1

Measure the two arches' length and width. Transfer these measurements to a piece of drywall and use a utility knife to cut out the pieces. Hold one piece up to the appropriate arch and secure it to the wood studs with drywall screws. Repeat with the second piece and arch. Imbed the screws slightly below the drywall's surface so drywall mud will easily cover them.

Step 2

Move to the drywall's backside so you can see the wood framework. Place a RotoZip on the drywall's bottom edge. Follow the arched framework and cut away the drywall that extends past it.

Step 3

Hang drywall on the arches' other side the same way you did in Step 1. Move to the doorway's opposite side and follow the framework with the RotoZip to cut away the excess drywall.

Step 4

Use a flexible tape measure to follow the archway's curved portion. Transfer this measurement to a piece of drywall. Measure the curved portion's width and transfer this to the same piece of drywall. Cut out this strip of drywall, with a utility knife.

Step 5

Position the drywall strip over the curved portion. Ask a friend to help hold the curved piece in place while you drive in the drywall screws. Drive a screw in every 3 to 4 inches so the drywall strip follows the archway's curve.

Step 6

Place a strip of flexible corner bead along the arches' corners. Secure the corner bead in place with drywall screws.

Tips

If you do not feel comfortable using a RotoZip, lift the drywall pieces up to the appropriate arches and trace the curve along their back sides. Then, cut along the line with either a drywall saw or a jigsaw before you screw them in place.
